‘Made in India’ smartphones expand global footprint: Exports surge 165-fold to Rs 2.59 lakh crore

India’s electronics manufacturing industry has expanded sharply over the past decade, with mobile phone exports increasing 165 times between 2014-15 and 2025-26, the government told Parliament on Wednesday.
Mobile phone exports, valued at roughly Rs 1,500 crore in 2014-15, have climbed to about Rs 2.59 lakh crore in 2025-26, according to a written reply by Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw in the Lok Sabha.
The minister also noted strong growth in domestic handset production, which has multiplied around 33 times over the same period — from Rs 18,000 crore in 2014-15 to Rs 6.27 lakh crore in 2025-26.
Electronics output expands nearly seven times
India’s overall electronics manufacturing sector has similarly recorded substantial gains, with total production rising from nearly Rs 1.9 lakh crore in 2014-15 to Rs 13.11 lakh crore in 2025-26.
Electronics exports have grown about elevenfold during the decade, increasing from close to Rs 38,000 crore to Rs 4.24 lakh crore.
Vaishnaw said the government has introduced focused policy initiatives to boost electronics manufacturing across the value chain, including semiconductors and memory components.
Semiconductor programme targets fabs, packaging and chip design
He highlighted that the Semicon India Programme, launched in January 2022, aims to support semiconductor fabrication plants, display fabs, packaging and testing facilities, and domestic chip design capabilities.
On memory chip production, Vaishnaw said two firms are currently manufacturing such components in India.
Micron is producing DRAM, NAND Flash Memory and Solid State Drives, while Sahasra is manufacturing NAND Flash Memory, he added.
The government also observed that global supplies of memory chips have tightened amid rising demand from artificial intelligence servers, data centres and advanced computing systems, leading to stronger memory prices.
Vaishnaw said the Union Cabinet has cleared Semicon 2.0 to further deepen India’s semiconductor ecosystem and create new opportunities in chip manufacturing, design and allied sectors.
According to the minister, the initiative will help meet both domestic and international demand, strengthen supply chain resilience and advance the goal of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
