Clean Streets, Toilets, Flower Fountains, 154 Screens: Delhi Gears Up for BRICS

The BRICS Summit is scheduled to take place in New Delhi on September 12 and 13, with 10 hotels in Lutyens' Delhi among the venues set to accommodate delegates.

The list of hotels includes Taj Hotel, Maurya Sheraton, Le Meridien, Claridges Hotel, Ashoka Hotel, Samrat Hotel, Leela Hotel, Janpath Hotel, Shangri-La and Taj Maan Singh Hotel.

In the run-up to the summit, preparations have stepped up across major roads and public areas, prioritising cleanliness, greenery, lighting and civic infrastructure. The plan covers 41 key roads grouped into 14 circles, along with 23 flower fountains, 15 floral boards and 17 roundabouts earmarked for special beautification and decorative illumination.

The NDMC has rolled out a large-scale beautification drive to meet international benchmarks of urban management, focusing on cleanliness, landscaping, uninterrupted services and upgraded public spaces across strategic parts of the capital.

"The preparedness plan is aimed at ensuring efficient planning, coordinated execution, uninterrupted civic services and international standards of urban management throughout the Summit period," NDMC Chairman Manoj Kumar Dwivedi said. "All concerned departments have been directed to work in close coordination to ensure that New Delhi presents a clean, green, well-maintained and aesthetically enhanced face to international delegates and visitors."

"To enhance the city's visual appeal, 15 sites have been shortlisted for floral boards, nine sites for flower fountains and 17 roundabouts for special beautification and landscaping," Dwivedi added.

41 Roads, 14 Circles: Delhi Gets Summit-Ready

The 41 roads have been organised into 14 circles, each overseen by a designated nodal officer. Daily on-ground inspections will be conducted to review cleanliness, beautification efforts, infrastructure readiness and adherence to prescribed SOPs.

The selected stretches include Raisina Road, Sansad Marg, Rafi Marg, Ashoka Road, Janpath, Connaught Place, Shanti Path, SP Marg, Teen Murti Marg, Africa Avenue, Aurobindo Marg, Safdarjung Marg, Lodhi Road and Prithviraj Road.

Several prominent sites and their surrounding zones have also been identified for targeted civic upkeep and beautification. However, the exact locations have not been made public due to security reasons.

23 Flower Fountains, 15 Floral Boards To Dress Up Delhi

The beautification blueprint includes 15 floral-board sites and nine flower-fountain sites, with 23 fountains in total. Seventeen key roundabouts will also be upgraded with special beautification and electric lighting.

Horticulture work will cover seasonal planting, landscaping, greening of worn patches, upkeep of green corridors, shrub pruning and the placement of decorative planters.

The objective is to ensure that major roads, public areas and important movement corridors look refreshed and well maintained throughout the summit.

Round-The-Clock Cleaning, 24x7 Civic Watch

Extra sanitation personnel and dedicated night teams will be deployed from September 9 to 14.

Mechanical Road Sweepers, Gobblers, Push Back Manual Sweepers, Ride-on Sweepers and Ride-on Scrubbers will be used for intensive cleaning. Temporary dustbins and mobile toilets will be installed where needed, and stray animals will be removed from identified areas.

Hotels, RWAs, market and trade associations and other stakeholders will also be engaged as part of the cleanliness initiative.

Potholes and broken footpaths will be fixed, while railings, road signage and street furniture will be inspected. Storm-water drains will be maintained and debris cleared.

Public toilets in the identified areas will be checked and kept operational and clean during the entire summit period.

With rain a possibility, steps will also be taken to reduce waterlogging and ensure proper drainage. Dry leaves and other waste will be removed from roads and public spaces.

Streetlights will be inspected and decorative illumination installed at selected locations. Backup power arrangements will be kept in place, and Quick Response Teams will be deployed to address electrical or lighting-related issues.

Electrical work is to be completed five days before the summit.

BRICS Branding On 154 Digital Screens

BRICS branding will appear on 154 digital screens and around 83 PTUs/CTUs across the area.

The outreach campaign will also feature publicity material at prominent roundabouts, public toilet facilities and other locations, along with updates via official social media channels and press releases. Social media posts have already been released.

Special enforcement drives will focus on encroachments and illegal hoardings, while street vending and construction activity along key and VIP movement routes will be kept under watch.

Medical Checks, Parking And BRICS Events

Ambulances and medical teams will be stationed at identified locations. Food establishments will be inspected, and mosquito-control and other preventive health measures will be intensified.

These steps are to be completed two days before the event and maintained throughout the summit.

Special enforcement drives will also target illegal parking, with designated parking arrangements made wherever necessary. Coordination with the Delhi Police and other agencies will cover traffic movement, security and public-space management.

NDMC has also put in place dedicated civic arrangements for BRICS Bazaar, BRICS Run & Ride, BRICS Murals & Painting and BRICS Food Festival. Nodal officers will coordinate cleanliness, sanitation, horticulture, infrastructure and electricity at the venues.

A 24x7 Command & Control Centre will track civic services through CCTV feeds, field inputs and routine inspections. Departmental and circle-level nodal officers will coordinate implementation and ensure gaps are addressed quickly.

The command centre, helpline and response system will run round the clock from one day before the event until it concludes.

NDMC will work with the Ministry of External Affairs, district authorities, the Delhi Government and Central Government agencies on summit-related arrangements.

Market and trade associations, RWAs and other organisations in the area have also been encouraged to join cleanliness drives and ensure proper upkeep of their respective premises.
