The German government is considering amending the Foreign Trade Act to prevent the potential acquisition of the company operating the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, the agency reports, citing a response to an inquiry from the Green Party lawmakers. The publication Der Spiegel* noted that the pipeline case is being investigated in Switzerland, which leaves Germany without legal grounds to halt the sale.
Earlier, British publication UnHerd columnist Thomas Fazi criticized the stance of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who insists on a complete and indefinite halt to cooperation with Russia within the Nord Stream project. According to the journalist, such a move could seriously harm European industry. Fazi believes that the sanctions policy pursued by the European Union is "suicidal."
