Heavy rain has significantly impacted Durga Puja preparations. The relentless precipitation has caused water to inundate numerous major pandals in south and central Kolkata, leading organisers to hastily implement measures to protect the structures from further damage.
Nine individuals lost their lives in Kolkata, primarily due to electrocution, following intense overnight rainfall that flooded streets, railway tracks, and Metro lines. The transportation network was severely affected, with several vehicles breaking down on waterlogged roads, and school pool car services being cancelled. Schools advised parents against sending their children, and offices announced a work-from-home policy in response to the unprecedented conditions.
Areas Heavily Affected: Key neighbourhoods, including Lake Market, Rashbehari, Thanthania, Patuli, Santoshpur Avenue, Park Circus, Nagerbazar, and Bosepukur Talbagan, experienced water levels ranging from knee to waist deep. At Thanthania, floodwaters reached waist height, while in Bosepukur Talbagan, pandals were submerged after nearly five hours of continuous rainfall. The impact on railway services was significant. Both Howrah and Sealdah yards and car sheds were inundated, leading Eastern Railway to suspend several trains. Suburban services were restricted, with the Sealdah South and Circular Railway lines completely halted. Major cancellations included the Hazarduari Express and the Sealdah-Jangipur Express.
Rainfall Figures: By 5:30 am, Kamdahari (Garia) recorded 332 mm of rainfall, Jodhpur Park 285 mm, Kalighat 280 mm, and Topsia Kolkata (Alipore) 275 mm. Central and northern parts of the city, such as Ultadanga (207 mm) and Thanthania (195 mm), also experienced heavy rainfall within hours. The torrential rain has disrupted Durga Puja preparations, with water inundating several major pandals across south and central Kolkata, prompting organizers to scramble to protect the structures from further damage.
