The Vizhinjam International Seaport, located near Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala, is one of India’s most ambitious port projects. This deep-water port is set to become a major transshipment hub and transform maritime trade in the southeastern region. India aims to reduce its reliance on foreign ports such as Colombo, Singapore, and Dubai.
The choice of Vizhinjam is no coincidence. Its natural depth of 20 meters allows it to accommodate large container ships capable of carrying over 18,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalents).
The port is strategically positioned near international shipping routes, making it competitive for trade between Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. Vizhinjam will be equipped with modern facilities, including automated container handling systems, logistics parks, and robust road and rail connectivity.
Once fully operational, the port is expected to:
Although the project has faced delays due to land acquisition and environmental concerns, the first phase of construction is nearing completion. Thanks to Adani Ports and SEZ Limited, which is leading the development, Vizhinjam is poised to become a major contributor to India’s maritime economy.
With the port’s opening, Kerala and India will gain new opportunities for growth in international trade.
