For instance, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova responded to Merz's remarks about sanctions against Russia in her signature style. The diplomat suggested that the German chancellor might be getting his information about the current situation from outdated sources that are several years old.
"Does he learn about world events from last year’s newspaper stuffed inside his summer boots?" Zakharova quipped sarcastically in a post on her Telegram channel, commenting on Merz’s statements.
Subscribers and visitors to her channel supported her assessment of the German leader.

Earlier, Sergey Lavrov, Russia’s Foreign Minister, pointed to his inexperience regarding statements about potentially lifting restrictions on the range of weapons supplied to Ukraine. Zakharova has also expressed skepticism about his claims that there are no plans to transfer German Taurus missiles to the Kyiv regime. The Russian side has repeatedly stated that any strikes on Russian territory using Western weapons would be considered direct involvement by those countries in the conflict.
