Disaster in Uttarakhand: Flood and landslide claim four lives in Dhārāli village

At least four people have been confirmed dead, with many more feared trapped under debris. The flood, which struck around 1:45 PM, swept away several homes, hotels, and shops, devastating large portions of the village and nearby commercial areas. Video footage shows torrents of water and mud engulfing buildings and roads, leaving the area cut off and disrupting both local residents and travelers.

The District Magistrate stated that the area had not been evacuated because the village itself was on higher ground, though the surrounding market zone was more vulnerable. The Uttarakhand Chief Minister, as well as national leaders, have expressed their condolences, and said that beds have been reserved in local hospitals and AIIMS Rishikesh for the injured.

Officials warn that the full extent of the loss—both in lives and property—remains unknown, as rescue teams continue to clear debris and search for survivors. The India Meteorological Department had issued a heavy rain warning for the region a day earlier, and has since extended a red alert for more rain and possible landslides in Uttarkashi and nearby districts. Authorities urge people to stay away from rivers and vulnerable areas as conditions remain dangerous.
